Florida Medical Marijuana ID Cards are issued through the Office of Compassionate Use, and are a part of regulations that were passed by the Florida Legislature in 2016. The Florida Department of Health says the rule for compassionate use became effective Feb. 19.

To apply for a Florida Medical Marijuana ID card, a patient must be a Florida resident and qualify to receive medical marijuana. Current conditions covered are epilepsy, cancer, chronic muscle spasms, and chronic seizures along with patients with a myriad of terminal conditions.

Amendment 2, which was passed last November, expands the qualifying conditions to HIV/AIDS, Crohn’s disease, glaucoma, ALS, post-traumatic stress disorder, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, or other similar conditions. This amendment was approved by 71 percent of voters last November, and was enacted on Jan. 3. The amendment allows for higher-strength marijuana to be used for a wider list of medical ailments than what was already allowed by state law. The amendment requires the state of Florida to adopt them by July 3 and have them in place by September of this year.
